An IU News & Talk Op/Ed

Is the time now to express tailored outrage about what appears to be code of silence in our national media regarding Detroit's Bankruptcy story?

A Tweet Reply we received asking if the National Media individual will cover this story is noted below. The name will be kept private as it was sent as a "direct message" tweet:

"I understand the Detroit story to be very important, but please don't spam folks on Twitter. It actually hurts your cause."
Dismiss stories spun by ready-to-the-call "roll-decked" talking heads on nearly every national media show on MSNBC, CNN, FOX News, ABC, NBC and CBS boasting phases of similarity: "It's the unions fault", "Those unfunded liabilities did Detroit in" or "only 47% of Detroit's populace is functionally literate".

The segments on National News Show continuing to play like a broken record in Americans, plus those across our World minds.

Instead, we are specifically targeting with a laser-beam type focus on the following story.

How Michigan residents far and wide were told untruths by the State's Highest Elected Executive - Governor Rick Snyder (R). Snyder acclaimed back in January to any national media resource who would hear his cry that, "Detroit would not declare bankruptcy", under his watch.

Little was known about the truth. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, truth is defined as:
"2: sincerity in action, character, and utterance
a   (1) : the state of being the case : fact (2) : the body of real things, events, and facts : actuality (3) often capitalized : a transcendent fundamental or spiritual reality
b : a judgment, proposition, or idea that is true or accepted as true
c : the body of true statements and propositions"
Politicians generally tell members of the public a version of a "truth" of preference, for the public to digest.

Former Bill Clinton split hairs with the "truth" when claimed he did not engage in improper relationship with White House worker Monica Lewinsky during 1995-1996. Evidence revealed later, the President engaged in a questionable relationship with Ms. Lewinsky. Initially not telling the truth, President Clinton's case almost took his seat as the United States Highest Elected Official in impeachment proceedings, if the public cares to remember.

The National Media during this time period above was "all over" this story and local news resources also, digging, investigating, questioning and probing any statements steering away from any version of the truth.

It appears ethical priniciples of Journalism were practiced when the person failing at telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth was our former President. It solely lacks using similar characteristics of truth, seventeen years later.

Maybe it's due to a
corporate consolidation of our national media resources where interests of a wealthy few, dictates what station managers and producers determination of People "need to know".

Back to the issue of Detroit's Chapter 9 Municipal Bankruptcy and the story behind this declaration.

Independent Underground News & Talk in our "Questions of Governor Rick Snyder's Public Office Ethics", in light of Revealing Emails Plotting Detroit Bankruptcy" local news resourced "The Michigan Citizen" article: a groundbreaking story that deserves debate and analysis on the national media stage.

To summarize, the plot included Gov. Rick Snyder, NERD Fund Employee Rich Baird, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and then not yet appointed Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr in email communications discussing how Detroit would be -- bankrupt.

The emails start on or about January 31, 2013, continuing over a three month period of record. This was well before Michigan residents and Detroit citizens believed the "Motorcity" difficult plight would end at the steps of a Federal Bankruptcy Court.

Equality important to this story is Governor Rick Snyder dispelled a bankruptcy for Detroit was "not on his agenda". Similar to his claim was made about not signing "Right to Work for Less" as a law of Michigan, then his mind changed December of 2012 as mass citizen protests occurred at the Capitol--- but bigger and more important.

Fox 2 News Headlines

See Detroit's Bankruptcy is about a promise made by not only Michigan's Constitutional document but equality to cities, townships, county's and villages far and wide across this state.

The first promise comprises of in just "pensions earned by workers will be guaranteed by Michigan's Constitution"; as Attorney General Bill Scheuette (R) has vowed to uphold throughout Detroit's Chapter 9 bankruptcy process.

The second promise equally important.

Michigan's citizens rights to believe what our Governor says, when its' discussed for all to hear.

We are not about strategic strategy sessions, were plans are discussed but not decided on. As Michigan's Open Meeting Act forbids Public Officials making policy decisions or statutory laws behind closed doors.

Specifically, the second promise made by Governor Rick Snyder was that he would do everything in his power to avoid Detroit filing for Bankruptcy, as a bold declaration of insolvency for Michigan's largest City not only would impact it but, our whole State and the United States of America.

In retrospect, former President Bill Clinton's statement about an improper relationship in the White House was gossip made for tabloids.
Detroit's Bankruptcy deals fiscal matters where the livelihood of the City's 700K citizens, 7 million estimated Michigan residents, plus others across the U.S.A. and our World will be impacted.

Will the bankruptcy lead to auction sales of Detroit's Assets: Belle Isle, the Water Department, Artworks at the Detroit Institute of Arts, City Parks, Land, Property Holdings, Transportation Department and the like?

What will happen to the People of Detroit who desiring vital City services: timely police and fire response, along with a Public School district to educate Detroit's Future generations? And the pension guarantees-- what would occur if promises that where made, are not kept?

To know, based on an groundbreaking report by "The Michigan Citizen", none of the questions posed above entered in email discussions between Snyder, Orr, Baird and Bing from January 31, 2013 - on, is appalling at best and disreputable at worst.

National Media journalistic code of ethics should require due diligence in reporting this story: how the People of Michigan were misrepresented on a national stage by Governor Rick Snyder's then unknown email collusion scheme to declare Detroit Bankrupt.

"Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice."
How long will our National Media Resources continue to bury this story, we don't know. But until the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is told, we must question if journalism still exist or has it been replaced with corporate born and bred propaganda spin.
