Detroit Public Schools (DPS) emergency manager Roy Roberts recently announced that he will close Davis Aerospace Technical High School. The program has been in existence for 60 years and is the only kind to be located on an active airport.
“Davis Aerospace is a jewel in this community. The rationale for moving it to Golightly cites a low enrollment of 196. I have visited Davis Aerospace many times and students actually benefit from the smaller classroom size",  David Alexander Bullock, Change Agent Consortium national spokesperson.

Additionally, low enrollment simply highlights the need for DPS to market this signature program better – not move the program and close the present building. Once again it seems that the bottom line is promoting a race to the bottom for DPS,” said Bullock.
Roberts announced the closure of four schools in April as well as the fact that some schools will change buildings and/or consolidate. Expanded curriculums inclusive of career paths, art and music programs are set to start this fall. The school closures and consolidations are expected to leave some teachers unemployed. Students that graduate from Davis Aerospace Technical High School earn an FAA license in avionics, a pilot’s license and their diploma.
