A victim of gun violence, the event will commemorate the nonviolent life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by demanding that Wal-Mart not bring guns into Southfield, Mich. Wal-Mart is the largest distributor of guns in America. Rainbow PUSH Michigan is encouraging the Southfield City Council to demand that Wal-Mart agree to refuse to sell firearms and ammunition in the proposed store.
“We have been fighting against the rising tide of violence in America since last year with our Crusade for America campaign. Unfortunately, since the commencement of this campaign we have seen not only massacre after massacre, but thousands of people killed by senseless violence," said D. Alexander Bullock.
"We want the Southfield City Council to use their influence to demand that Wal-Mart not sell guns and ammo in the new store if approved. We are also asking them to respect the human dignity of workers. If Wal-Mart refuses we will call on city council to reject their zoning plans at its January 28th meeting."The space that Wal-Mart wants to occupy requires purchasing the property that used to house the Church of St. Bede from the Archdiocese of Detroit. Wal-Mart recently came under fire last week after originally declining to participate in the gun legislation talks at the White House held by the task force led by Vice President Joe Biden.
