"Our lawmakers must answer these questions. Declaring money equal to “speech” in Buckley v. Valeo, unleashed the ability of individuals to create a system of plutocracy in America. Wealthy individuals began to control public policy by funding political campaigns. Those with wealth now have giant gilded megaphones to speak to our lawmakers, leaving those without wealth, without representation." said Roman Collins, Michigan Director for Move to Amend.
The Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission Supreme Court case codified that plutocracy into law, by declaring corporations “people.” The Michigan Campaign Finance Act and other laws banning private money in elections are now “unconstitutional.” Corporations, unions, and outside groups, now have the right to spend as much money as they would like on political campaigns in Michigan. An era of corruption has begun, “we the people” of Michigan are starting a movement to take back our democracy with a constitutional amendment to end pay-to-play politics. Corporations are not people, and money is property, not speech."The event will including lobbying State elected leaders and officials to adopt principles of the Move to Amend Movement to remove corporate money out of political decisions and legislation, as well as possible speakers from the Michigan Election Coalition, the Michigan Center for Election Law, PIRGIM, and Common Cause. Once lawmakers answer, there will be a report released.
