DETROIT – College students from the Detroit region who attend Howard University and surrounding area schools traveled twelve hours by bus to return to Detroit and vote in the 2012 Presidential Election.  Nearly 40 students departed from Washington D.C. Monday evening and arrived at Fellowship Chapel Tuesday morning at approximately 4:30 A.M.  The students’ bus is sponsored by the Freedom Institute, a local 501c3 organization committed to Economic, Social Justice and People Empowerment.  Erin Keith, a Senior at Howard University, and fellow student Teeahnah Addison, sought out the help of Freedom Institute and organized the students to return home to vote.

“This election is too important for us not to go to the polls,” says Keith.  “This trip is something we can do to make sure our voice is heard and that our votes count.  Everyone going on this trip feels strongly about this election and understands that the issues at stake are too serious for us to make any excuse not to exercise our right, even if it means traveling many miles to check one box!”
Impressed by the students tenacity, Monica Anthony, Executive Director of the Freedom Institute worked with Congressman John Conyers office, the Detroit Branch NAACP and the Fannie Lou Hamer Political Action Committee to help the students be able to return home and vote.  Congressman Conyers will meet with the students and spend some time with them before they depart.
“We are encouraged and enthusiastic about the desire of these college students determined to make a difference and be a part of the democratic process,” says Anthony.  “We applaud them and wanted to make sure we could assist them in any way possible.”

The students will head back to Howard University at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday evening from Fellowship Chapel, located at 7707 W. Outer Drive in Detroit.  Howard University is an Historically Black College and University located in Washington D.C.
