D. Alexander Bullock Condemns Voter Integrity Legislatio

(DETROIT) – 48 years ago on July 2, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act. It was designed, among other things, to enforce the constitutional right to vote.

This was a victory for the expansion and protection of voting rights for all Americans. Today, we face a national attempt to undo the gains of the civil rights movement, suppress voting rights and potentially engineer the outcome of the national election.

With over 39 states having some kind of voter suppression legislation in place, last Tuesday Republican Pennsylvania State Rep. Mike Turzai admitted that voter ID laws are designed to suppress the vote during a speech to the Republican State Committee summer meetingTurzai’s office, like many GOP leaders around the country, claims that voter fraud does exist and the purpose of Pennsylvania voter ID laws is to “protect the integrity of the vote.”
“This admission by Rep. Turzai is not surprising. There is a national strategy in place to disenfranchise the vote of many Americans. Pennsylvania and Michigan are just apart of a larger move to engineer the outcome of the presidential election.
It is clear that voter integrity is a code word for voter suppression. These legislative policies are clear attempts to disenfranchise American voters, restrict voter behavior and destroy the democratic fabric of this country. These practices should be condemned and struck down unequivocally,” said D. Alexander Bullock.
States across the country have passed laws that will make it harder for African Americans, the elderly, the poor, students and the disabled to vote. While studies show that voter fraud is rare, the list of states joining the list to require a new form of ID is growing; as recent as last Wednesday the New Hampshire legislature passed a law requiring ID to vote.

D. Alexander Bullock, president of the Rainbow PUSH Detroit chapter and Rainbow PUSH Michigan state coordinator, has been leading the fight to protect the vote in the Midwest.

He has traveled to Harrisburg and Philadelphia, Pa., multiple times to organize against the voter suppression tactics in the state and state occupation of Harrisburg. Last March he joined the Rev’s. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton for the march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., for Bloody Sunday to commemorate the event and raise awareness about the present day struggle for voter protection and voter expansion.
