(DETROIT) - In a landmark moment, President Barack Obama endorsed the right of same-sex couples to marry on today.
This decision comes on the heels of a Tuesday decision by North Carolina voters’ to approve of a constitutional amendment banning not only same-sex marriages, but also civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.
"This appears to be shaping up as a key issue in this election cycle, but should not shift debate from the need for economic recovery in America. This new development is consistent with the president’s commitment to civil rights and equality for all American citizens. We cannot let religion, race, class or sexual orientation justify the equal status of all citizens. I applaud the president for courageously, in this election cycle, defending the rights of all Americans,” said D. Alexander Bullock.D.
