Florida Gov. Rick Scott's (R)effort to purge
voters before 2012 elections, stopped
by a letter issued on May 31st from
the Department of Justice.
Discussing stories on efforts to stop U.S. citizens from voting is a part of ROJS Radio Live continuing effort to expose officials or politicians who choose to use their 'resources' in order to Block the Vote, in violation of 15th, 19th and Suffrage clauses within our U.S. Constitution.
The two reports that were cited from "Think Progress" include the story of Arkon, Ohio born, Florida resident Maureen Russo. Ms. Russo who after over 40 years of voting in various elections, received a letter from the State of Florida stating she wasn't a U.S. citizen, and therefore would be purged from voting rolls prior to Tuesday, November 6, 2012 Presidential election cycle.
From Think Progress site on May 25th:
Maureen Russo was born in Akron, Ohio. For the last 40 years she’s operated a dog boarding and grooming business — Bobbi’s World Kennels — with her husband in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Maureen is 60 years old and has been a registered voter in the state for the last four decades. She regularly votes at the church around the corner from her home.
Two weeks ago she received a letter from the State of Florida informing her that they had received information that she was not born in this country and, therefore, was ineligible to vote.Additionally, on ROJS Radio LIVE Sunday's program, we read the letter "Think Progress" received from Ms. Russo from Broward County Supervisor of Elections, Dr. Brenda Snipes on May 8th.
"According to the Broward County Supervisor of Elections, eligible voters will be removed from the voting rolls as a result of the massive voter purge ordered by Governor Rick Scott. “It will happen,” Mary Cooney, a spokeswoman for the Broward County Supervisor of Elections, told ThinkProgress.
Late last year, Governor Scott ordered his Secretary of State, Kurt Browning to “to identify and remove non-U.S. citizens from the voter rolls.” Browning could not get access to reliable citizenship data. So Scott urged election officials to identify non-U.S. citizens by comparing data from the state motor vehicle administration with the voting file."Today we're pleased to report that "Think Progress" and "Talking Points Memo" site confirmed the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has stepped in to demand Gov. Scott and Florida state elections officials cease and desist purging voters from voting rolls, immediately.
From Think Progress on May 31, 2012:
"The Justice Department sent a letter to Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner Thursday evening demanding the state cease purging its voting rolls because the process it is using has not been cleared under the Voting Rights Act, TPM has learned. DOJ also said that Florida’s voter roll purge violated the National Voter Registration Act, which stipulates that voter roll maintenance should have ceased 90 days before an election, which given Florida’s August 14 primary, meant May 16.”Talking Points Memo posted the exact contents of the letter DOJ sent to Secretary of State Ken Detzner, and lets' just say that if Gov. Scott thought purging certain Florida voters before the elections were going to be kept "under the rug", he lost that battle this evening.
