Can You Help? ROJS Radio Saturday, January 28th Podcast Details a Story of a Single Mother Forced to Panhandle near a Dangerous Freeway Exit to Feed her Child
Our Saturday, January 28th podcast covered a story shared by local news station WXYZ.com of a single mother named "Linda", who have to panhandle off the I-94 freeway in Belleville, Michigan to provide food and shelter for her family.
"Linda" spoke to WXYZ.com on Friday, January 27th, how cuts to Michigan's Department of Human Services cash assistance program in November 2011 for single mothers and their children, affect families weren't funds on drugs or other unnecessary life needs.
“I don’t want to be out on these streets. I don’t want to stay on nobody’s bench with my daughter. I need to just stand strong to keep a roof over her head and food in her stomach. I don’t matter. I’m here to do for my child,” said Linda to WXYZ-Channel 7.
"I’m struggling. I’m struggling to make it with my daughter. So, I’m a little embarrassed, but I keep pushing because I wanted a child. I just wanted a child. I don’t do drugs," says Linda. "I’m just trying to keep a roof over me and my daughter’s head."
Local News Station WXYZ Channel-7 Interviews "Linda" and Michigan State Police Trooper Duane Zook
Local Ypsilanti business owner Billy Salamy of Budget Towing has partnered with Michigan State Police Community Service Trooper Duane Zook, to take donations for "Linda" in hope that she will not have to panhandle on the freeway area, with her young 6 year-old daughter, if her personal situation doesn't improve.
“She doesn’t have any trace that I recognize for anyone that I recognize as having contact with drugs or alcohol. He says the resources to help her get back on her feet are limited and lacking,"said Trooper Zook to WXYZ reporter Juile Banovic. "She seems to have a very good heart... and is doing the right thing, trying to do the right thing by her and her family, her daughter.”Budget Towing is coordinating an donations drive for "Linda", which was mention on our ROJS Radio podcast Saturday, January 28th. Interested parties can contact Budget Towing for immediate donations for Linda at 734-485-2055.
