Michigan's school board elections date changed to November with new law

A law signed by Gov. Rick Snyder (R) on November 29th, changes school board elections dates. With the legislation, the elections now will be held in November of even-numbered years.

The now law will require school board and intermediate school district elections to be held at the same time as November general elections.

Those who support the new law cite the change will ensure that school board elections are held when voter turnout is highest and, consolidating elections will save money in some locations. Opponents say it would cost schools and local jurisdictions -facing budgetary issues- more money if they must switch election dates.

Michigan law previously allowed schools a few options over a two-year cycle for when to hold board elections.
