Two educational jewels in Detroit, Michigan might have to close permanently, due to lack of funding, in a city were 20-30% of children who start in the educational system, graduate in twelve years.

Financial issues will force both Detroit Science Center (DSC) and Detroit's Children Museum (DCM) to unexpectedly close from September 26th to October 12th, according to the Detroit News.

Knowledge of the museum's fiscal straits surfaced when former President and C.E.O. Kevin Prihod's resigned on August 26th, after six years in his position. The Detroit Science Center, which holds $5 million in real estate debt, has fallen behind on mortgage payments.

Prihod's projects which included an expansion at the museum, creating of two traveling exhibits and a loan construction of a new public charter middle school University Prep Science & Math, added to the DSC's budgetary woes.

The charter school is expected to remain open and not be impacted by the closure of the DSC or DCM.
"We certainly regret having to close the center for two weeks, and know that impacts a lot of families and school groups," DSC Board Member Shelly Otenbaker stated to the Detroit News.
"We certainly hope to be reopening. That said, it's premature to make any promises or predictions," she stated.
A turnaround team appointed by the DSC's Board of Directors, plans to use the two weeks to develop a strategic plan to to re-open the museum. Still, its' unsure on when the DSC will re-open to normal operating hours after the two week period.
