A graduate and Hall of Fame inductee of class of 1959 at Willow Run High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Ashford grew up in the Appleridge neighborhood.

Ashford, an elegant songwriter, wrote soulful classics for the likes of Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye and many top charted funk hits, passed in a New York City hospital. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment.

Ashford along with his songwriting and singer wife Valerie Simpson, had some of their greatest success with classics like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand" by Diana Ross , "You're All I Need To Get By" by Gaye and Tammi Terrell and the anthem "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan (and later remade by Whitney Houston).

Perhaps Ashford biggest known hit sung by him and wife Valerie, the 1980s hit "Solid As A Rock."
