CBC Job Tour in Detroit, gives Michigan's job seekers and interest parties an unique opportunity to inquire about upcoming legislation in U.S. Congress to decrease the nations' 9.1% unemployment rate and address Michigan's higher than national average jobless rate of 10.5%.
Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Bobby Scott (D-VA) of the CBC, on February 9th, introduced the only piece of legislation this year to tackle long-term unemployment in this country, with HR-589-The Emergency Compensation Act of 2011. ROJS News writer Monica RW was in attendance during the Press Conference, to offer support on behalf of Michigan's long-term unemployed job seekers, regarding the bill.
Movement on behalf of HR-589 was shut down after meeting President Obama administration leadership on March 30th, when they cited the cost of the bill was "too prohibitive".
A follow-up meeting with Speaker of the House John Boenher (R-OH) on April 7th, was cancelled by members of his office during Federal Government Shutdown negotiations and have yet to be rescheduled. Continuing action on HR-589 has stalled, as the bill is sitting within both the House Ways and Means, and Human Resources Committees.
