Two highly influential Democratic Senators are going on the record to cite that if President Obama compromise on future cuts to the cost of living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security and Medicare health program, they will use their power to defeat such a bill measure.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) along with Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) hosted a press call with reporters from Think Progress and a number of other news organizations on Friday, about their opposition of talks of using Social Security and Medicare in debt ceiling negotiations.

Obama's Press Secretary Jay Carey started a firestorm in Democratic circles after his July 7th daily briefing Carney noted in a response to an reporters questions, that the president had vowed in his State of the Union address in January to put Social Security on a firmer footing, and that he would not place the subject off limits in negotiations to reduce the deficit.

negotiations with GOP leaders.
Senator Sanders -who gave a passionate filibuster speech on his chamber floor in opposing President Obama previous "compromise" back in December 2010 on extending Bush Era tax cuts for the top 15% of wage earners- thinks regressive cuts to these programs in a debt ceiling deal would hurt Obama's re-election changes. In addition, Sanders noted that he would do “everything” that he can to defeat such a package.

Later in the call, Think Progress cited that a Washington Post reporter asked Sanders if he’s convinced that a debt deal that includes Social Security cuts would be unable to pass the Senate.

The Senator from Vermont responded by saying that leadership in the chamber have informed him that they aren't willing to vote for a “piece of crap” deal. Also, Sanders stated that White House is in for a “serious surprise” if it expects the Senate to approve any package it hands down.

President Obama proposed cuts are also not in favor of a majority of the American public views on how to approach debt ceiling negotiations. A recent Pew Research poll found that 60 percent of Americans believe it is more important to keep Social Security and Medicare benefits intact than to reduce the deficit.
