Speaker of the House John Boehner
(R-OH) cancelled schedule meeting
with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) to
discuss HR-589 for long-term
unemployed job seekers.

A meeting scheduled to take place today between Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) sponsor of HR-589, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Expansion Act of 2011 and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), has been cancelled due to on-going debate to avoid a federal government shutdown.

Originally announced March 22nd, the meeting would have followed up on a Congressional Press Conference with 99ers, advocates for the long term unemployed and Reach Out Job Search writer Monica RW on February 9th

The measure, initially introduced at the press conference, was to offer 14 additional weeks of unemployment benefits jobless individual pass the initial 26 weeks of state funded payments was announced.

Initially, HR-589 received no initial support from Republicans because it would add up to $16 billion to the federal budget deficit. To work with Speaker Boehner demands, Representatives Lee and Scott later announced they would be open to finding budget cuts to offset the cost of the benefits.

According to reporter Arthur Delaney of the Huffington Post, Speaker Boehner cancelled the planned meeting with Representatives Lee and Scott to discuss possible legislation for the long-term unemployed and 99ers on April 7th.

Instead, Boehner’s heading to the White House Thursday afternoon for more shutdown talks with President Obama.
“We’re disappointed Speaker Boehner had to cancel the meeting,” Lee spokesman Joel Payne said. “We hope it can be rescheduled for next week.”
If the government shutdown happens on Friday, April 8th, which was discussed on this afternoon in a press conference with Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV); Reid insisted it will be due to Conservative Tea Party Congress members demands on non-budgetary rider issues, like ending women breast cancer screenings. If a shutdown occurs, it is unknown if a meeting on HR-589 for long-unemployed job seekers and 99ers will be rescheduled for some time to come.
