(Video) Fifth largest earthquake in history, measuring 8.9 in magnitude, hits Japan

(Japan)-Japan has been shocked by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast around 2:45 AM EST, triggering a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter.

Update at 4:15 AM EST-MSNBC is confirming that a 7 to 8 foot tsumami wave warning has been issued to the state of Hawaii at this time. Residents near the shore are vacating to higher ground. 


Update at 4:22 AM EST-New York Post is reporting via Twitter tsumami warnings are being issued for the entire California, Oregon, Washington State and Alaska coast lines, with first landing estimated at 8:16 AM PST for San Francisco, CA.

Pictures and video show citizens on their rooftops waving white flags, cars trying to avoid the tsumami coming on to shore at speed of a jet plane, with homes and structures caught up in the rushing water onto shore. At this point, news reports on MSNBC is reporting that Japan's 8.9 magnitude earthquake is the 5th largest recorded in the world.

Video (linked below) also has showed a large crew ship swept caught into the tsumami that rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.

The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.9.

The meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan. National broadcaster NHK was warning resident near the coast immediately to get to safer ground.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.


Update at 5:18 AM EST-Reports of at least 29 fatalities in Japan has been confirmed.
