Reach Out Job Search writer,
radio host Monica RW will be
at 2/9 Press Conference with
Reps. Lee and Scott, on behalf
of Michigan long-term jobless
As reported on February 7thReach Out Job Search Blog webmaster, radio host and writer Monica Ross-Williams (Monica RW) of the Metropolitan Detroit area, will be in attendance Tier I Extension Press Conference on February 9th in Washington, D.C.

Leading and speaking at the event will be Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA), Bobby Scott (D-VA), Gregg Rosen-Co-Founder, American99ersUnion and Dr. Heidi Shierholz-Economist, Economic Policy Institute.

Ms. Ross-Williams presence will represent long-term unemployed individuals from the state of Michigan totaling an estimated 350,000; with approximately 150,000 of this group classified as 99ers -current exhausted from all forms of state or federal emergency unemployment compensation assistance.

Recently as January 2010, Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Growth reported the state unemployment rate lead the nation at 14.3 percent. Up to 693,000 state residents were counted as jobless and search for an unemployment opportunity.

As for January 2011, Michigan's jobless rate made some slight improvements, dropping to the fourth highest in the nation at 11.7 percent. In turn, the drop in joblessness can be equality attributed to a loss 54,000 state residents, as noted in the 2010 Census report. In addition, due to the loss of population, Michigan will lose a Congressional seat in the House of Representative, starting in 2012.
"As a lifelong Michigander, my life is tied to this state. Moving would be the easy thing to do and many have, just for an opportunity to take care of there families", Monica RW stated.
"But, Michigan is my home and I feel strongly that the long-term unemployed, here in my state, want three things: additional income assistance that would be included in the drafted Rep. Lee and Scott bill, a true job creation program similar to a FDR (Former President Frankin D. Roosevelt) and to see our great state comeback from our economic crisis. No one wants to be permanently unemployed."
A Press Release from Congresswoman Barbara Lee's office was released on February 7th, announcing the upcoming press conference:

"Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Congressman Bobby Scott will join Gregg Rosen of the American 99ers Union and Dr. Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) to introduce The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Expansion Act, legislation to extend emergency benefits to long-term unemployed workers.
Many of these long-term unemployed workers, known as 99ers, have exhausted their benefits and need this assistance to support their families, make ends meet and contribute to our economy. The bill would provide 14 weeks of emergency unemployment benefits to people who have exhausted all their benefits and are still unemployed.

Not only is providing these benefits the right thing to do, but it is sound economic policy that will support our economic recovery.  Economic experts, like Dr. Shierolz from EPI, believe that extending these benefits will have a greater stimulative impact on our economy than handing unpaid-for tax giveaways to multi-millionaires."
The conference is scheduled Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 9:45 a.m. at the Capitol Visitors Center, HVC Room 200.

On the Reach Out Job Search podcast on Blog Talk Radio, Thursday, February 10th, starting at 6:00 PM EST, host Monica RW will re-cap her thoughts and opinions of the Washington, D.C. trip and the press conference.
