General Motors Co. is expected to announce a major investment Monday to increase truck production at its Flint Truck Assembly plant, adding a third shift and more than 650 jobs.

The plant in the economically challenged Flint area, assembly General Motors  large trucks, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The location employs about 2,000 hourly and salaried workers. GM hourly workers on layoff would be first eligible for the openings.

Since emerging from bankruptcy in 2009, GM has invested more than $3.8 billion in 24 facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada areas; including in Michigan which was one of the hardest hit by the manufacturer restructuring efforts. The investments have restored or created more than 11,500 jobs, the company says.

GM is among a number of automakers benefiting from resurgence in truck sales in recent months.

Demand for trucks has been so strong that GM is fast-tracking some truck redesign programs put on hold during the automaker's bankruptcy, North American President Mark Reuss told the Detroit News at the North America International Auto Show last week.
