Rally to Restore Sanity was a Huge Success; With Over 250,000 in attendance

More than 250,000 Attendees Enjoyed
Comedy Central's Jon Steward and
Steven Colbert Rally to Restore Sanity
and/or Fear in Washington, D.C. 10/30
Jon Steward of Comedy Central and Steven Colbert's, Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, on the Washington, D.C. National Mall October 30, was a huge success. Estimates from the event organizers easily surpassed the initial 60,000 attendance requested in the part permit. The crowd surpassed an estimated 250,000 attendees, on the Mall listening to a variety of musical artists, public figures and with comedians Steward and Colbert.

The message passed listening audience was to take a pause, the insanity of the media on both sides of the political right and left who amplify noise and, down out reasonable discussion. Large screens placed throughout the rally, showed a variety of news personalities, "talking heads" and politicians from the left and right, engaged in divisive rhetoric.

Prominently shown to the crowd was Fox News Talk Show Host Glenn Beck, whose conservative based Restoring Honor rally in Washington in August. Steward cited on The Daily Show on Comedy Central, the Beck rally was part of the motivation for the Stewart and Colbert event. The October 30th, rally of the Comedy Central hosts and political pundits, appeared to rival Beck’s rally in attendance.

Artists who entertained the large crowds at the Restore Sanity Rally included R&B Singer John Legend, award winning band The Roots, Kid Rock-Detroit, Michigan based and international known rock singer, Grammy award winning contemporary artist Sheryl Crow.

Jon Steward took about 15 minutes to give closing remarks before the end of the event, informing the crowd to drown out the noise heard within this election cycle to at least listen to the other side beliefs.

"The country's 24-hour, political pundit, perpetual, panic conflict-inator did not cause our problems. But its existence makes solving them that much harder," Steward said. "If we amplify everything, we hear nothing."

"Not being able to distinguish between real racists and Tea Party-ers, or real bigots and Juan Williams or Rick Sanchez, is an insult, not only to those people, but to the racists themselves who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate," Stewart said, referencing former newscaster Rick Sanchez, who was recently terminated from CNN, for his unsavory comments about Stewart and other Jewish Americans. "Just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe, not more."

"Most Americans don't live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, Liberals or Conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people that are just a little bit late for something they have to do. Often something they do not want to do. But they do it. Impossible things (are achieved) every day that are only made possible through the little reasonable compromises we all make," he said.

During Steward’s speech, the large television screens played footage of cars slowly inching through traffic. Stewart used the image of the highway as metaphor for how Americans make those compromises, ceding the road when necessary and recognizing that everyone is headed toward a similar goal.

In closing, Steward told the crowd that by the peaceful nature of the event and many attendees from across the nation that came to his call on the Washington, D.C. National Mall, his belief in America’s sanity, was restored.

"Sanity has always been in the eye of the beholder," he said, "And to see you here today, and the kind of people that you are, has restored mine."
