In Michigan, Gov. Jennifer Granholm on October 14, demanded mortgage lenders halt Michigan foreclosures pending an investigation, and participate in the Michigan's Helping Hardest-Hit Homeowners Fund to help homeowners avoid foreclosure.

Michigan Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero, jumped on the issue the first week of October, following a New York Times report which began cast light on widespread problems of sloppy paperwork and possible fraud by mortgage lenders nationwide.

Candidate Bernero warned bankers at a Detroit Economic Club meet-the-candidates event last Thursday that should he be elected, they will not have a friend in the governor's office if they have, cheated Michigan homeowners, the Detroit News cited.

"We're glad the attorney general has decided to do the right thing after Mayor Bernero called on him a week ago," Bernero spokesman Cullen Schwarz said to the Detroit News. "Action is even more necessary than in other states, and Virg has personally helped residents in Lansing that are being wrongfully foreclosed on."
